Vikings

Vikings is a nine episode television series by the History channel, it  follows the 44 minute format. The story is set in 13th century Europe and centres on the Viking raids of one particular warrior named Ragnar. It stars Travis Fimmel in the lead role and has been renewed for a second season recently.

Well while this will probably never be on the level of breaking bad, Borgias or orange is the new black, it is probably miles above most of the majority of popular western tv dramas I’ve watched. The setting helps me invest in this one, obviously not filmed in Scandinavia but it still does a good job of creating that feel. I liked the dorama between the two brothers and the lead being at loggerheads with the chief. The action scenes/violence when it occurs delivers fine, entertains and it would appear that though the series, split into a few arcs is still  building up, but doing a good job of getting us invested in that second season upcoming. It develops, does evolve and keeps things going. The arc just following the one with the village lord was my favourite. For a nine episode run of 44 minute episodes it never really felt dense and I say that as one who marathoned it in one sitting. Although in general it does not become too much of an issue, it can on occasion feel a little stilted (although this pertains to some dialogue) and I do feel that it is not yet “there” yet in a manner of speaking. Vikings has the action, two leads, action to claim enough potential to be worth keeping an eye.

Verdict: ***

Bit of trivia for you: Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar, comes from the area near Echuca, a town in Australia.

Another thing I liked about this series was the protagonists wife, who felt like a strong female character.
