Maps to the stars

Maps to the stars is a drama film directed by David Cronenberg, starring Julianne Moore 111 minutes long. The plot centres on an aging actress with some emotional baggage in her past, who hires a personal assistant with some damage of her own.

Again as is typical of Cronenberg beneath the oddity is something else, some sort of statement, here he’s telling us that behind a pretty picture and glitz something dark is lurking and playing on our fascination with whats going on in the private lives of actors. He backs it up with three interesting lead characters, each with their own psychological drama to deal with, relying on some well inserted, utilized horror elements to help with a healthy dash and dose of muted presentation mixed in with a great dark, messed up edge and some black comedy for good measure thrown in, I liked how the plot flowed, Mia Wasikowska’s character really caught my attention in particular and the film has kind of a depressing edge to it.  As one of his non-horror films goes this is on the high end, just below eastern promises He also gets a good performance out of his two leading actresses, especially Moore. Where he falters is in that he couldn’t get the same out of his male lead actors , Pattison particularly gets the short end here, John Cusak  was only alright here, Evan Bird could have performed a lot better also. He’s also gone and made his film fifteen minutes too long. But decent Cronenberg work is still very watchable work  nonetheless.

Verdict: ***
