American history x is a drama film starring Edward Furlong and Edward Norton, it is directed by Tony Kaye. When a teenage boy hands in an essay sympathizing with Nazism his principal insists you he write a new one, this time about the boy’s brother, an ex-convict and former white supremacist.
I think Edward Norton was an interesting fit for the lead characters brother in this film. He has an innocent tone to his voice and appearance which makes his character all the more disturbing/effecting when he goes into neo-nazi mode in the flashbacks, its also a strong performance. Furlong who plays the younger brother brings out the naiveté of his young, impressionable character well. The Neo-nazi cult leader was, although he didn’t show up a whole lot was pretty chilling. While the actual acts in this film are effecting, for me it was how convinced/convincing Norton’s character sounded despite us knowing that the views he was spouting were far-right wing lunacy. But it’s the themes here that really sell me on this movie, how ones upbringing, environment, the death of a loved one can have negative effects on one’s mind. The film goes further and deals with the idea that people can and will actually change themselves. The movies ending while shocking did make me think about what road Norton’s character would go down next. I wouldn’t say this affected me on the same level as the believer but it did a good job. I can’t say I liked how the flashbacks were shot in black and white though.
